Op vrijdag 27 mei werd bij Pingwins de Moeder van Alle Toernooien gespeeld: het jaarlijkse clubkampioenschap! De opkomst bleef dit jaar helaas onder de verwachtingen, onder andere omdat betere spelers als meervoudig clubkampioen Panco Chung, Nico van Houten en Denny Leung op vakantie waren. En het lekkere lenteweer dreef wellicht sommige andere leden naar de terrasjes op het Plein.

Wie evenwel dacht dat Joey Tetelepta hierdoor vrij simpel alle tegenstand zou wegvegen, had het verkeerd voor. Ons nieuwe lid, Tina Nemarnik, won immers al haar kwalificatiewedstrijden, ook tegen Joey, in poule A, de sterkste groep. De finale beloofde dus erg spannend te worden en dat was ze ook. Joey beschikte uiteindelijk over de sterkste zenuwen. Hij kwam snel met 2-0 voor. Tina vocht terug tot 2-2, maar bezweek in de laatste set. Joey verlengt dus zijn titel, maar enkel met bloed,zweet en bijna tranen. Als hij volgend jaar opnieuw wint, dan mag de Beker met de Lange Oren definitief in zijn kast blijven!

In de B-poule won Yan Biu Cheng eindelijk van zijn broer Yan Sau en doorbrak hiermee de familiale hiërarchie. In C-poule vocht Jod Hsu voor wat hij waard was, maar hij moest toch de duimen leggen voor Sergiy Ulyashyn. (JG)

Club’s championship: lady (almost) first!

On Friday May 27, we organized the Mother of all Tournaments: the annual Club’s Championship! The participation rate remained a tad below expectations this year, amongst other because better players like multiple tournament winner Panco Chung, Nico van Houten and Denny Leung were on holiday. The nice weather also kept some other members close to the terraces on “Het Plein”.

Those who thought Joey Tetelepta would simply walk over any potential resistance, erred massively. Our new member, Tina Nemarnik, won all qualification games for the final in the strongest group A, including from Joey. The final was supposed to be exciting and it definitely was! Eventually Joey proved to possess the strongest nerves. He took a quick 2-0 lead, but Tina fought back till 2-2. Only in the final 5th set she succumbed. So Joey did prolong his title, but only after shedding blood, sweat and almost tears! If he wins again next year, he may keep the Cup with the Long Ears definitively!

In group B Yan Biu Cheng finally won from his brother Yan Sau, herewith overthrowing the family hierarchy. In group C, Jod Hsu fought for what he was worth, but that was not enough to win from Sergiy Ulyashyn. (JG)
